This is a very old and very light purple or lavender colored jar; depending upon the lighting, the bottle can appear gray. I kept going back and forth as to the color. The glass is opaque with a slight slag marbling to it. The jar, as well as the aluminum lid, is embossed. The lid is embossed with Harriet Hubbard Ayer Face Cream U.S.A.”, and one side of the square glass is embossed with “Harriet Hubbard Ayer New York N.Y. U.S.A.”

The jar was created by hand blowing into a two part mold and then putting a bit more glass on the top (after the jar had been formed) to make the screw top. You see, the screw threads do not have the mold line going thru them…This is an unusual factoid about this jar. Usually jars/bottles that were created in this fashion (where the mold line stops before the neck) are dated before 1860. But when I was going down the rabbit hole to investigate this little jar, I really think this jar was probably created between 1887 and 1893. Sometimes glass tells lies and this is one of those instances. As for the history of Ms Ayer. It is absolutely fascinating. She was definitely a woman before her time.
The jar, itself, is like holding a time capsule in your hand.

Do not be deceived by the cleanliness of this jar. For the most part, I do not feel that old glass has patina on it…just plain dirt. I acquired this jar, along with several others CAKED with dirt – as they were dug jars. Literally, the jars had between 1/16 to ½ inch layer of dirt. I had to soak them in warm water over and over again to get to the point where I could get to see what they actually were.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it normally take you to ship an item?

All orders received by 8:00 PM Eastern Time are processed (mailed) the next day. I usually drop off packages at the post office in the morning six days a week; I normally drop off packages to the UPS drop off point in the afternoon five days a week.
    - Etsy does not have a system where we can list UPS as an alternative. I ship via USPS or UPS, whichever is least expensive and quickest. I refund shipping overages paid by you.

What do you do if the shipping calculator has over estimated or under estimated the shipping charges?

If the shipping calculation is over by more than 50 cents, I will reimburse you. Yup, I will reimburse you 50 cents.

If the shipping calculator is under by any amount, you will not know about it; that is, I will not request that you make any further payment because of an error of mine, the calculator, or the system.

If I contact you, when can I expect a reply? What are your normal working hours?

My normal hours seven days a week are 1:00 - 9:00 PM. I answer questions within two hours during this time.
On my off hours, I will normally return your question as soon as I open up for the day.

I do not operate with any smart devices - only dumb ones, as they simply do not work in dead zones, so I periodically throughout my day check the old desktop.

Are there any other requirements to return an item? For what reasons do you allow returns?

    1. You, the buyer, shall ensure the items are received by me in the SAME condition in which you received it. You are not required to use the original packaging and box. Feel free to use your own if you so desire
    2. In addition, please provide me, via a convo, the tracking number within one eight calendar days of receiving the item.

Returns can be made for any reason whatsoever. You will receive the original cost of the item and the original shipping. I do not charge a bogus restocking fee. Be aware that the cost to return the item (shipping) will not be reimbursed to you.

Do I, the buyer, pay for shipping insurance?

As you may or may not be aware, shipping insurance benefits the seller. I normally pay for the insurance, if any. The only time, you (the buyer) would pay for the insurance is if YOU request it.

I do not normally buy additional insurance as I tend to pack for a nuclear blast...or, at least, for war.

    Do you accept offers?

NO, I am sorry. I do not.

I do, however, encourage you to shop around. In many of my listings, I leave a reference at the bottom of the description to assist you in your research. This way, you will be able to compare apples with apples.
